Fluoride Varnish & Fissure Sealants

Fissure Sealants and Fluoride Varnish – longer protection for you and the family

We go the extra mile for our patients and want to make sure you’re protected from tooth decay when going about your everyday life. This is why we offer fissure sealants and fluoride varnishes to act as a longer form of protection for your teeth.

Used alongside an efficient oral hygiene routine, these treatments act as a barrier between the tooth’s surface and environmental factors that contribute to bacteria and plaque build-up reducing the chance of developing cavities.

What are fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants are plastic coatings applied to the back teeth and hardened by a UV light. This protective layer keeps food debris, bacteria and harmful sugars from becoming trapped in the grooves of the teeth that could lead to decay.

This treatment is quick and painless. Your Brickfields dentist will thoroughly clean your teeth before applying the sealant gel and curing with a blue light. The sealant will last for many years however your dentist will check for wear regularly to make sure the layer has remained intact.

What is fluoride varnish?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral which helps to prevent tooth decay and is a common ingredient in toothpaste. Your Brickfields Dental Care dentist will brush a thin coat of fluoride varnish gel onto the surface of your teeth, which will need to be repainted after six months.

The varnish reacts with the surface of your tooth creating a harder surface of enamel. Safe for both adults and children, this treatment is painless, affordable and an excellent way to bolster your preventative oral hygiene.

FAQs

How do cavities form?

Cavities, or tooth decay, are areas of your teeth that have become damaged and developed into tiny holes. They are formed through a combination of factors including consumption of too many sugary foods, prolonged bacterial build-up and a poor oral hygiene routine. An untreated cavity may develop into a larger hole that could affect nerves, fracture the tooth or even lead to an abscess through infection.

Is fluoride safe?

There have been concerns that fluoride could be linked to a range of health conditions however there has been no convincing evidentiary support in review of these concerns. The use of fluoride by dentists is supported by every major health organisation in the fight against dental disease.

So pleased to have been recommended for a consultation for dental work at Brickfields. Time was taken by Mr. Patel to explain in detail what dental treatment was required for me. I left well informed, and confident in his ability to treat me. Thank you.

I have just completed root canal treatment and I cannot fault the highly competent dentist Mitul, who completed the procedure, and Toni who assisted. The atmosphere was extremely professional and the rapport between Mitul and Toni was great which made for an easy atmosphere and consequently put any nerves at ease. The procedure was as pleasant as root canal treatment can be and apart from the initial numbing injection, was completely pain free.I would also like to add that the Covid procedures at Brickfields are excellent and you feel safe at all times.
