Supporting your natural teeth with bespoke restorative dental bridges and crowns

If you have missing teeth, you will know the effects that unwanted gaps in your smile can have on your self-confidence and on normal daily tasks such as eating and speaking depending on how many teeth you have lost.
The dental professionals at Brickfields Dental Care have been putting the smiles back on our patient’s faces through expert crown and bridge treatment at our Chelmsford practice.
What are dental bridges?
A dental bridge is used to cover a gap left by a tooth that has been compromised in some way and either fallen out or been removed by a dentist. This restorative is used to secure a false tooth, also known as a ‘pontic’, to either one of the neighbouring teeth, or ‘abutments’, by way of a bridge-like prosthetic.
A dental bridge can be a temporary or permanent solution to missing teeth and is generally used when a patient does not wish to undergo surgery for implant treatment.

At Brickfields Dental Care, we offer three types of bridges:

- Conventional Bridge: this traditional type of dental bridge includes the abutment teeth on either side of the porcelain pontic filling to replace the missing tooth.
- Adhesive Bridge: sometimes referred to as a ‘Maryland Bridge’, this type of bridge uses metal wings attached to the inside surfaces of the neighbouring teeth to support the porcelain replacement tooth
- Cantilever Bridge: similar to a traditional bridge, except the cantilever bridge is held in place by a dental crown to which a single abutment tooth is cemented
Dental bridges – the treatment procedure
At your initial consultation, our compassionate dental professionals will assess your needs and provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan designed to complete your smile and optimise your oral health. We will discuss all aspects of your treatment with you and answer any questions you may have regarding the process.
We will then prepare the bridge abutments and crown the neighbouring teeth sitting on either side of the gap. To fit the crown, your dentist will remove a small portion of the tooth’s enamel. An impression will be taken of your teeth and sent to the dental lab where your hand-crafted bridge will be made. During this waiting period, your dentist will fit you with a temporary bridge so that you can carry on in your normal day-to-day with a complete smile.

Through restorative bridge treatment, our dental experts can:

- Give you a complete and natural-looking smile
- Help you to chew and speak properly
- Prevent remaining teeth from moving out of position and becoming crooked
- Restore your natural bite
If you think you could benefit from a dental bridge, we want to hear from you.

Dental Crowns for damaged teeth in Essex
When a tooth is damaged, a complete cover may be required to protect the tooth from further fracturing. A crown acts as a cap that covers the entirety of the tooth’s surface and ensures the preservation of your cracked or broken tooth.
Crowns can also be used in place of a filling when tooth decay has severely impaired your tooth and is the more aesthetic option for cavity repair as the crown itself is made of a natural tooth-coloured material.

What are the different types of dental crowns?

At Brickfields Dental Care, we offer a range of dental crown options:
- All-ceramic crowns
- Metal ceramic crowns
- All Zirconium crowns
- Gold crowns
Your Chelmsford dentist will recommend the best type of crown for your dental needs.
The dental crown procedure explained
If your dentist has advised you to be fitted with a crown to protect your tooth, they will first ensure the stability and viability of the root and tooth through x-ray.
The tooth will then be prepared to receive the crown and an impression is made to enable the lab to produce the crown. A temporary crown will be fitted to protect the tooth in the interim period of crown manufacture. The crown will then be fitted up to 2 weeks later at a secondary appointment.

FAQs
How long will my bridge last?
Our bridges are built for long-term wear and with the right care can last up to 15 years. Your Brickfields Dental Care dentist will advise you on the proper hygiene techniques to keep your bridge in good condition.
Do I take my bridge out at night?
A dental bridge is known as a fixed dental prosthetic meaning that it is bonded to your remaining teeth. The bridge stays in place at all times so there is no need to take it out before you go to sleep. Looking for a removable alternative? Head over to our dedicated dentures page.
